I recently have had to choke back the vomit from hearing this recent rash of pop "hippified, give peace a chance" music. This make love not war crap is getting totally out of hand and resulting in a nation of wide-eyed morons that truly believe that our enemies do want peace with us and aren't going to take that proverbial olive branch that we hand them and turn around and plunge it through our idealistic jugular vein! These Utopian dwellers think that it is our oppression upon these countries that have resulted in the unrest and minor uprisings that we have seen. Think again you bubble gum smacking, coeds that are unfortunately being raised to think by college professors that smoked waaaaay too much pot in the 60s, dropped waaaayyyy to much acid in the 70s and now are hoping they are granted tenure before the truth about their little "disease" they contracted while practicing their "love not war ideology" so that they can make sure to be a leach on the health care system for the rest of their days. The enemies of this country, if they had not been oppressed, would have blown up your materialistic, disrespectful, and pamper ass a long time ago. All of these kids throwing peace signs up on their myspace pages...ARG! What a slap to our troops that are protecting your ass! If the enemy had their way, you would not be picketing for your rights...you would be caned in the streets for even showing any offensive to the ruling regime! Instead of boys walking around with their pants sagging around their knees and girls ...well, barely wearing anything...men are beaten if they shave their beards, and women are stoned to death and/or violated in prisons that have no holding limitations. I would like to hear a song that it NOT country that is about taking care of our own, supporting our troops, being proud of who we are, loving what this country stands for. If I hear one more crappy hippie songs..I am going to puke.

Even In Texas....we have liberal idiots!

DALLAS — When editorial writers at The Dallas Morning News chose the illegal immigrant as the newspaper's Texan of the Year, they expected some criticism. But not this: 800 blog postings and more than 150 letters to the editor blasting the decision.

What did they think would happen? In a state overrun by illegals we, the common Texan, are outraged by this. I even have REAL LEGAL TEXANS of Mexican origin that are highly offended by this.

Illegal immigrants do not pay taxes, yet receive all of the benefits supported by those that do. Illegal immigrants take jobs that could be filled by those on public assistance. Illegal immigrants send a lot of the money they make back to Mexico and take money out of our economy. Illegal immigrants are not able to serve in the military, are responsible for the majority of social security number fraud, and have no loyalty to the country that feeds them....only to Mexico.

It has long been publicized that the Dallas Morning News is a liberal-driven paper with backing from those rich philanthropists that have nothing better to do than to try and score a better, cheaper workforce to scrub their toilets and work in their factories.

Illegal immigration is a terrible risk to our nations security and today, I am not willing to risk my life, nor the lives of my children to reach some level of political correctness or world-oneness tolerance... like any good Texan, I own a gun and I will protect mine. I believe that if you want to enter this country you need to come through Ellis Island and meet all the requirements to do so.

AND if you are an illegal immigrant....YOU ARE NOT A TEXAN!

The Month before Christmas!

Posted on 2007.12.04 at 16:49
'Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
See the PC Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - No one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a " Holiday ."
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was nowhere to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-is-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Durbin, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Reed, on Kerry, on Clinton !
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS, not Happy Holiday!

Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes is even tired of it!

Good for him!!!
Surprised CBS let him get away with this even though he's right!!!

Right on, Andy Rooney!

Andy Rooney said on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back:

I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of
anything except numbers. The only things I can
think of that are truly discriminatory are things like
the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine,
Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America.
Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund,
Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or
Miss White America; and see what happens...
Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door.

Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing
makes you a killer. You can kill someone
with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying
to ban you from driving to the ball game.

I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason,
which is why there are no girls allowed.
Girls belong in the Girl Scouts!

I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong,
it is not a phobia, it is an opinion.

I have the right "NOT" to be tolerant of others
because they are different, weird, or tick me off.

When 70% of the people who get arrested
are black, in cities where 70% of the population
is black, that is not racial profiling; it is the
Law of Probability.

I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake,
a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room,
you must do it in English! As a matter of fact,
if you want to be an American citizen,
you should have to speak English!

My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you
can leave the countries you were born in to
come over and disrespect ours.

I think the police should have every right to shoot
your sorry ass if you threaten them after they
tell you to stop. If you can't understand the
word "freeze" or "stop" in English,
see the above lines.

I don't think just because you were not born
in this country, you are qualified for any
special loan programs, government sponsored
bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can
open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store,
or any other business.

We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries
and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms,
so that decades later they could come over here
and tell us our constitution is a living document;
and open to their interpretations.

I don't hate the rich . I don't pity the poor.

I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and
television. That doesn't stop you from watching them.

I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every
penny he made and continue to make more.
If it ticks you off, go and invent the next
operating system that's better,
and put your name on the building.

It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right,
but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid;
and smack their little behinds when
necessary, and say "NO!"

I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want
them, but please don't pretend they are a
political statement. And, please, stay home until
that new lip ring heals. I don't want to look at
your ugly infected mouth as you
serve me French fries!

I am sick of "Political Correctness."
I know a lot of black people, and not a
single one of them was born in Africa; so
how can they be "African-Americans"?
Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around
saying I am a European-American because my
great, great, great, great, great, great
grandfather was from Europe
I am proud to be from America and nowhere else
And if you don't like my point of view, tough...

Without secure borders the American people cannot be protected from an invasion of illegal aliens; from terrorist attacks, from deadly gangs, such as MS-13; and from ruthless alien drug cartel activities. We have already been victimized by the policies that have left our borders porous and unsecured. During the Clinton and Bush Administrations some 20 million illegal aliens have entered our country and it is estimated that some 4,000 walk over the US border from Mexico every night.

On September 11, 2001 approximately 3,000 of our fellow citizens were killed, in part, because our borders had not been secured and our immigration laws were not enforced. We remain as susceptible today to terrorist attack as we were on that day. In addition, illegal aliens are responsible for a large part of the violent crime and drug problem in our country. How many more law enforcement officers need to be killed, citizens raped and murdered or acts of terrorism resulting in mass destruction as experienced on 9/11 need to occur before our government takes the appropriate action to secure our borders? The politicians whom we have elected in both the Congress and in the Executive branch have failed in their Constitutional responsibilities to our country.

The National Veterans Coalition knows that our border with Mexico must be sealed immediately for our nation to be secure. At least 50,000 active duty military personnel should be stationed on the border to supplement the Border Patrol to perform all patrol duties, except the military would not have arrest authority. The military forces at the border should be armed and be able to use their weapons if threatened by anyone crossing the border. Active duty personnel will be required until the FENCE that Congress approved prior to the 2006 elections is built and additional Border Patrol can be hired and trained.

Veterans will be active politically to ensure that this country, which we have served to protect, is once again secure and that means SECURED BORDERS, the most crucial of which is the border we share with Mexico.

The United States of America must posses the trained manpower, proper war fighting equipment, prepared facilities, unparalleled intelligence gathering capability and the strong, dedicated will of the people topped off with America-First Leadership in the Executive and Legislative branches of our government, IF our nation is to survive the existing global terrorist war.

We must defend our shores and our people against an enemy, whose pursuit of their goals is achieved by use of suicide bombers, including women, boys and girls. They have declared their goal to be the destruction of the United States and they are working methodically toward that goal. In light of this, it defies all reason and logic why the Clinton and Bush Administrations, and a Legislative branch that has been equally complicit by its failure to exercise its Congressional oversight powers, have consciously allowed twenty million illegal aliens to invade our country and colonize our towns and cities. How many of these illegal aliens are terrorists? Are we willing to wait until terrorists cause more death and destruction before we take the necessary action to protect our nation and secure our borders?

It is essential to exercise vigilance worldwide through effective intelligence operations and military preparedness that is second to none to protect against those who mean us harm and will use terrorism to accomplish their ends. Likewise, with knowledge of those who have trained, equipped, funded and have a history of supporting terrorism on a worldwide basis, it is irresponsible for our government not to take every possible measure to protect our borders from invasion from such an enemy. The fact is, however, that while the both the Bush Administration and Congress have been quick to pass measures which seriously impede the Constitutional rights of law abiding American citizens, they have been unwilling to lift a finger to impede the access of terrorists to our nation across unsecured borders.

The National Veterans Coalition affirms that, without question, the foremost duty of the United States is to provide a strong national defense to protect its citizens from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Our Air Force and Navy must be so strong that no aggressor, whether terrorist or otherwise, could ever believe they would survive an attack by our forces. Our Army and Marines must be kept strong, well equipped and prepared to deal with any threat to our nation. Having a military which is second to none in strength and preparedness for the defense of our nation, there should be, with few exceptions, no need for the boots of our military on foreign soil.

Approximately twenty million illegal aliens, who are unaccounted for and colonizing our towns and cities, are costing the taxpayers of this country over $50 billion per year. Most of these illegals are attracted to this country by the fact that there are employers in this country who are willing to violate immigration and tax laws in order to hire cheap labor.

In addition to securing our borders we must stop the unlawful practices of American employers, large and small, who attract the illegal aliens to this country by making jobs available to them. Not only must we treat the illegal aliens as lawbreakers, we must also treat their employers the same way and prosecute them to the full extent of the law. Past administrations, in particular the Bush Administration, have had abysmal records in the enforcement of employer sanction laws for the employment of illegal aliens. The rule of law must prevail. Just as illegal aliens must face prosecution and deportation for ignoring and violating our immigration laws, so must American employers face punishment for the same reason.

The present income tax system is the scheme written by a handful of men, mostly representing the banking establishment, in 1913 for the purpose of getting their hands on money of the American people to fund increasingly larger government and to pay the debt to the Federal Reserve System, which is controlled by the banking establishment. This scheme came to fruition through enactment of the 16th Amendment to the Constitution. There is considerable question as to whether the 16th Amendment was properly ratified and also whether it may properly be used as justification to tax the wages of Americans paid in exchange for labor. Nonetheless, the unfair, burdensome and confiscatory Federal Income Tax and the intrusive, punitive IRS have been an unnecessary and unpleasant fact of life for Americans for too long!

The National Veterans Coalition fully supports the Constitutional Tax Reform plan of the Constitution Party. The Constitution Party tax plan is simple, responsible and based on realistic figures. It will cut Federal spending down to constitutional size and replace the current graduated income tax system, and eliminate the Internal Revenue Service, with a system modeled after the original approach found in the Constitution.

Revenues would be raised via reasonable tariffs on imported products and limited excise taxes on non-essential goods and services. To the degree that tariffs on foreign products, and excises are insufficient to cover the legitimate costs of the federal government, the Constitution Party supports an apportioned “state-rate” tax in which the responsibility for covering the cost of unmet obligations will be divided among the several states in accordance with their proportion of the total population of the United States, excluding the District of Columbia. Thus, if a state contains 10% of the nation’s citizens, it will be responsible for assuming payment of 10% of the annual deficit.

The effect of this “state-rate tax” will be to encourage politicians to argue for less, rather than more, federal spending, and less state spending as well.

By supporting the Constitutional Tax Reform plan of the Constitution Party a major economic burden would be removed from the backs of all Americans, an oppressive bureaucracy would be removed, and constitutional functions of government could be met without incurring further debt.

Just as they are attracted by the promise of employment, illegal aliens are drawn over our borders by medical care, social services and education which are provided free to them courtesy of the American taxpayer. If American taxpayers knew how much each are having to pay to subsidize the cost for schools, additional law enforcement, bigger jails and prisons, food stamps, social programs and unlimited medical care for the support of illegal aliens, it is likely that there would be a revolution!

Twenty million illegal aliens are being supported by 280 million taxpaying Americans. The illegal aliens who are employed as cheap labor are contributing little or nothing for these services. More money is spent for the support of illegal aliens than is spent on our own poor and for our American veterans. This is an outrage!

Once in office, most of our elected politicians forget about the taxpaying citizens who put them there and instead pander to special interests. The Democrats have recruited new party members and potential voters from the ranks of the illegal aliens with promises of taxpayer funded programs. Republicans have trolled for vast amounts of campaign cash from the employers who hire illegal aliens and who expect to be shielded from prosecution for these practices as well as to be subsidized with taxpayer funded medical, school and fraudulent social services support for this illegal alien source of cheap labor.

The National Veterans Coalition insists that the best method of stopping the illegal alien invasion of this country is to enforce existing laws precluding the hiring of illegal aliens and to stop all taxpayer subsidies and social programs to illegal aliens.

Our way of life is threatened by the failure of our elected officials to take effective measures to eliminate this problem. Therefore, all politicians who fail to take immediate action to enforce employer sanctions and to cut off subsidies for illegal aliens must be voted out of office. This is essential to ensure America’s survival as a free and sovereign nation and it will be a political priority of the National Veterans Coalition. The National Veterans Coalition will do everything possible to replace those politicians who have failed in their responsibility by electing candidates of the Constitution Party who will uphold their oath to defend and protect the United States.

Big oil corporations, big business and multinational corporations have held America hostage to foreign oil dependence for far too long! Look at the billions of dollars that leave this country every year to import oil. Take a look at the profits these corporations reap every year for being the middle man bringing the oil from the well to the final stage where it is gas pumped into your automobile. Think also about the gas prices the American consumer is forced to pay and the hardship that it places on the lives of average Americans. The reason? An insane national energy policy!

It need not be this way. Brazil, as an example, is totally energy self sufficient and has been for years. They accomplished this as a result of the development of sugar cane alcohol. Every new car manufactured in Brazil is fully capable of running on 100% alcohol, 100% gasoline or a mixture of both. Propane powered vehicles are also available.

Why hasn’t the United States, the most technologically advanced nation on earth, accomplished the energy independence enjoyed in Brazil?

We have abundant oil resources in Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and off our shores that remain untapped. We must remove unreasonable, excessive regulations on exploration, drilling and refining of oil in this country. We also have abundant coal, enough for 700 years, even at high usage rates. We have the advanced technology to develop nuclear energy as well as alternative energy resources such as ethanol from plants, wind, solar and high capacity storage batteries.

With all of our resources and technology we are decades behind in attaining energy independence. This must change now! Energy is vital to our economy, our standard of living, our way of life, our very freedom, our children’s future and our national security. Beginning as far back in history as Jamestown, Plymouth Colony and Bunker Hill, veterans and all people in this country have worked to provide a secure and free place for industry to exist and prosper. It is now time that industry develops a national strategy, much like the effort to place a man on the moon in the 60’s, that will put this nation on track for energy independence within five years. It can be done. It is a priority of the National Veterans Coalition that it will be done!

Veteran Cuts Down Mexican Flag - Watch more free videos

All 17-year-old Andrew Larochelle wanted to do was honor his grandfather.

Andrew was being inducted into the Eagle Scouts, and he thought a wonderful way to celebrate this achievement would be to honor the man of patriotism and faith who was his inspiration.

So, as approximately 100,000 other Americans do every year, he requested, through his congressman's office, to have a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol. It would be a gift for his grandfather, an Army veteran. Andrew asked that the certificate accompanying the flag have this inscription:

"This flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country and family."

But when Andrew received the flag he had requested, government bureaucrats had censored his tribute to his grandfather. The Architect of the Capitol, which administers the flag program, had removed the word "God" from the certificate.

The radical secularists who want to see all references to God and faith driven from our public spaces had claimed another casualty of religious freedom and, in this case, free speech.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi initially defended the censorship, which is particularly ironic, seeing as how references to God are throughout the Capitol where she serves.

Even the document that most radical secularists claim gives them the justification to censor public references to God -- the Constitution -- concludes with a reference to "our Lord."

Or maybe these enemies of God in the public square did notice all these references to faith and religion. Maybe that was the point.

As Republican Congressman Eric Cantor (Va.) pointed out, the Architect of the Capitol's policy of removing religious expressions from flag certificates "establish[es] a dangerous precedent that, if left unchallenged, could eventually lead to the removal of the word God from all government buildings, currency and documents."

We Owe Andrew Larochelle and Congressman Michael Turner a Debt of Gratitude

But this story of a government bureaucrat's attempt to censor references to religion in the people's House has a happy ending -- unlike many stories of faith being purged from our public life.

The heroes are Andrew Larochelle and his congressman, Michael Turner (R-Ohio).

Andrew and his family contacted Rep. Turner, and the congressman refused to let the bureaucracy's religious censorship stand.

More then 100 of his Republican colleagues joined Turner in writing a letter to House Speaker Pelosi demanding that the policy of deleting references to God from flag certificates be abolished.

The letter got right to the heart of the matter, stating: "The Architect's policy prohibiting 'God' from appearing on certificates for flags flown over the U.S. Capitol puts at risk our religious freedoms and heritage."

An Incomplete Victory for Religious Freedom

After feeling the outrage of the American people, late last week, Acting Architect of the Capitol Steven Ayers announced that the policy of censoring religious statements was being "revised." But his reasoning was flawed, to say the least.

The Architect of the Capitol said that the policy was changed because it was "beyond the scope of this agency's responsibilities to censor messages from members of Congress."

Notice that he doesn't defend the legitimacy of religious expressions on the flag certificates, just the illegitimacy of his office's censoring the requests of members of Congress.

He doesn't stand up for the right of religious expression, just the prerogatives of members of Congress.

We can do better. We must do better. Congressman Turner and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) are the sponsors of the "Andrew Larochelle God, Family and Country Act of 2007."

Call your senators and representatives now and demand that freedom of religious expression in the people's House be affirmed, not just the right of members to get their way with bureaucrats.

Austraila's Answers to Muslims!....I love it!

Posted on 2007.10.06 at 10:10
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on
Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to
head off potential terror attacks.

A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to
Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he
and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics
could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a
secular state, and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your
values, if you want a country whic h has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then
Australia is not for you," he said on National Television.

"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia: one
the Australian law and another Islamic law that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law,
independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another
country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option ," Costello said.

Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could
possibly be asked to move to the other country.  Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that
Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off" Basically people who don't want to be
Australians, and who don't want, to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can
basically "clear off," he said.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies
monitoring the nation's mosques.

Quote: "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying
about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced
a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians."

"However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against
anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia ." "However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand."

"This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity.
And as Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle."

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom"

"We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.
Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society. Learn the language!"

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian
men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate
to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as
your new home, because God is part of our culture."

"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A Fair Go," then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where
you came from. By all means, keep your culture, but do not force it on others."

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But
once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of
Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'."

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here.  So accept the country
YOU accepted."

The Elders...part 2

Posted on 2007.10.05 at 09:29

Someone asked me if I was embarrassed by the liberal tongue-lashing I have come under by voicing my opinion on this new faction that call themselves, "The Elders."  Hardly, it is my opinion and I do find it very disturbing that these individuals are taking it upon themselves to be given "ambassador-like" status.  Plus, as being a veteran, I feel it is my right (which I personally fought for, and some of my personal friends DIED for.)

If Jimmy Carter had been jailed, or killed, in his recent encounter, who do you think would suffer because of it?  The imaginary "global village" that they "represent?"  No, it would be the plight of the United States soldiers.

Do you really think that we, the United States, would be able to stand by and watch as one of the "Elders" was imprisoned....let's not forget that he is a former president of the United States of America.

Can you imagine Peter Gabriel, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and the rest of these "Elders" and their supporters, suiting up in roit gear to go bust him out?  Hardly....Since the U.N. deemed it too dangerous for Carter, I do not see them volunteering U.N. troops (which are mostly U.S. troops anyway) ....

KABKABIYA, Sudan (AP) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter got in a shouting match Wednesday with Sudanese security officials who blocked him from a town in Darfur where he was trying to meet representatives of ethnic African refugees from the ongoing conflict.

The governor of North Darfur, Youssouf Kebir greets Jimmy Carter at his residence in El Fasher on Tuesday.

The 83-year-old Carter walked into this highly volatile pro-Sudanese government town to meet refugees too frightened to attend a scheduled meeting at a nearby compound.

Carter was able to make it to a school where he met with one tribal representative and was preparing to go further into the town when Sudanese security services interrupted.

"You can't go. It's not on the program!" the local national security chief, who only gave his first name as Omar, yelled at Carter, who is in Darfur as part of a delegation of respected international figures known as "The Elders."

"We're going to anyway!" an angry Carter retorted, telling security officers they didn't have the authority to stop him.

As a growing crowd gathered around the former president, Carter's U.S. security detail and his African Union escort tried to ease tensions. Carter later agreed to a compromise by which tribal representatives would be brought to him at another location later Wednesday.

"I'll tell President Bashir about this," Carter said, referring to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

The Darfur conflict began when ethnic African rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government, accusing it of decades of neglect. Sudan's government is accused of retaliating by unleashing a militia of Arab nomads known as the janjaweed -- a charge it denies.

More than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million driven out of their homes in four years of violence.

The visit by "The Elders," which is headed by Carter and Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu, is largely a symbolic move by a host of respected figures to push all sides to make peace in Darfur.

While Tutu led a group to the Otash refugee camp in south Darfur on Wednesday, the U.N. mission in Sudan deemed it too dangerous for Carter to visit a refugee camp.

The former U.S. president instead flew to a World Food Program compound in Kabkabiya, where he was supposed to meet with local community members including some ethnic African refugees, many of whom were chased from their homes by pro-government janjaweed and Sudanese government forces.

But as the meeting was set to get under way, none of the nongovernment refugee representatives arrived, and Carter decided to walk out into the town to try to talk with them.

"The Elders" delegation is trying to use their influence at a crucial time -- with peace talks due to start in Libya and deployment of a 26,000-strong hybrid African Union-U.N. peacekeeping force to begin later this month.

Tensions are running high after rebels overran an AU peacekeeping base in northern Darfur, killing 10 in the deadliest attack on the beleaguered force since it arrived in the region three years ago.

Carter said Wednesday that he felt "The Elders" trip was proving effective. He said al-Bashir told him this week that Sudan has committed $100 million to a fund for Darfur's reconstruction and another $200 million has been pledged by Chinese diplomatic allies.

Carter said the main goal of three-day visit to Sudan was to seek guarantees for free and fair elections throughout the country in 2009.

Observes fear the elections could be postponed and warn that this could imperil the fragile peace in southern Sudan and worsen the conflict in Darfur.

If on time and open, the slated 2009 general elections would be the first democratic election since al-Bashir came to power in a military and Islamist coup in 1989.

Carter said during a private meeting with al-Bashir in Khartoum, the Sudanese president had vowed the elections would take place.

"If the CPA fails to fulfill its commitment to free and fair elections and democracy in this country, all other efforts will be futile," Carter said, referring to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended 21 years of civil war between Sudan's Muslim government in the north and the Christian and animist rebels in the south has improved life.

Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu Announce
The Elders – An Historic Group of World Leaders

Johannesburg, South Africa – Out of deep concern for the challenges facing all of the people of our world, Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, and Desmond Tutu have convened a group of leaders to contribute their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity to tackle some of the world’s toughest problems.

Nelson Mandela announced the formation of this new group, The Elders, today in a speech he delivered on the occasion of his 89th birthday. He was joined by founding members of the group, Desmond Tutu, Graça Machel, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter, Li Zhaoxing, Mary Robinson and Muhammad Yunus. Founding members, Ela Bhatt and Gro Harlem Brundtland were unable to attend.

“This group can speak freely and boldly, working both publicly and behind the scenes on whatever actions need to be taken,” Mandela commented. “Together we will work to support courage where there is fear, foster agreement where there is conflict, and inspire hope where there is despair.”

Tutu, Chair of The Elders remarked, “Despite all of the ghastliness that is around, human beings are made for goodness. The ones who ought to be held in high regard are not the ones who are militarily powerful, nor even economically prosperous. They are the ones who have a commitment to try and make the world a better place. We – The Elders – will endeavor to support those people and do our best for humanity.”

The Elders will use their unique collective skills to catalyze peaceful resolutions to long-standing conflicts, articulate new approaches to global issues that are or may cause immense human suffering, and share wisdom by helping to connect voices all over the world. They will be working together over the next several months to carefully consider which specific issues they will approach. The Elders’ criteria are not only the magnitude and importance of the challenge, but a deliberate view that their role could contribute significantly to solving the problem.
In addition to working independently, The Elders will work to complement, not duplicate or compete with the efforts of other organizations. They will seek opportunities to partner with established groups in ways that help shine a light on work already underway or to assist in bringing the group’s efforts to another level.

“I see The Elders as a small but independent group that may fill an existing void in the world community,” said Jimmy Carter. “Almost impervious to the consequences of outside criticism, the group will conduct unrestrained analyses of important and complex issues and share our ideas with the general public and with others who might take action to resolve problems."

The Elders will invite new members who share the attributes of the original ten: trusted, respected worldly-wise individuals with a proven commitment and record of contributing to solving global problems. Elders will step down if they are elected to public office.

“I have worked with extraordinary people at the community level, people who have brilliant ideas and are making a huge effort to solve problems but often their contribution is localized, and their voices are not strong enough to be heard,” said Graça Machel. “The Elders can play a role in amplifying the voices of the millions of citizens of the world.”

Several years ago entrepreneur Richard Branson and musician and activist Peter Gabriel discussed with Mandela the obstacles to solving difficult conflicts facing the world. Their idea of a small, dedicated group of leaders, working objectively and without any vested personal interest in the outcome, began to develop and eventually grew into The Elders.

Founder Peter Gabriel said, “In traditional societies, the elders always had a role in conflict resolution, long-term thinking and applying wisdom wherever it was needed. We are moving to this global village and yet we don’t have our global elders. The Elders can be a group who have the trust of the world, who can speak freely, be fiercely independent, and respond fast and flexibly in conflict situations.”

The Elders will be independently funded by a group of Founders, including Branson and
Gabriel. Additional Founders include: Ray Chambers; Michael Chambers; Bridgeway
Foundation; Pam Omidyar, Humanity United; Amy Robbins; Shashi Ruia, Dick Tarlow; and The United Nations Foundation.

“This group of Elders will bring hope and wisdom back into the world. To play a role in bringing us together to stop unnecessary human suffering and to celebrate the wonderful world that we are so privileged to be part of,” said Founder Richard Branson.

Wow. A self-appointed, and self-governing committee of liberal leaders. Don't get me wrong, there are many respected people on this board.....but, I am sure that this is a bad idea. Don't we have government agencies specifically designated for this? I love my mother and I respect her deeply, but I do not want her speaking for me without AT LEAST speaking with me first! That is why we have elections. This is democracy. The United Nations (which I also have a low opinion of) already has this job...but now we have "The Elders?" I read the biographies on the ones I was not familar with, and they are all of a liberal mindset. They even call it thier, "Global Village" (cough, gag, cough...sorry). Keep your eye on this group. Trust me.
